Analysis on the Timbre of Ambisonics Repro- Dution Using a Binaural Loudness Model

چکیده
Ambisonics are a series of flexible sound reproduction systems that decompose and reconstruct sound field by each order approximation of horizontal Fourier or spatial spherical harmonics decomposition. For a given order reproduction, providing that the product of wave number and the radius of the rendering region is approximately less than the order, the system is able to recreate the target sound field with reasonable accuracy. If the condition of accurate reproduction is not satisfied, spatial aliasing and interference occur in the reproduced sound field, which inevitably change the timbre in reproduction. The present work analyzes the timbre in Ambisonics reproduction using Moore’s binaural loudness model, and the binaural loudness level spectra is used as a criterion to evaluate the timbre in reproduction. The results indicate that, increasing of frequency or deviation from central listening position may break down the condition of accurate reproduction, accordingly result in change in binaural loudness level spectra and perceived timbre. Increasing order of system reduces the change in binaural loudness level spectra and improves the timbre.

Analysis on the timbre of Ambisonics recording by circular and spherical microphone array using a binaural loudness model
Ambisonics are a series of flexible sound reproduction systems that decompose and reconstruct sound field by each order approximation of spatial harmonics decomposition. Circular or spherical microphone array has been used for Ambisonics recording. For an array with given radius as well as given number and configuration of microphones, the spatial harmonics signals up to certain temporal freque...
متن کاملHuman Echolocation in Static Situations: Auditory Models of Detection Thresholds for Distance, Pitch, Loudness and Timbre
We investigated, by using auditory models, how three perceptual parameters, loudness, pitch and sharpness, determine human echolocation. We used acoustic recordings from two previous studies, both from stationary situations, and their resulting perceptual data as input to our analysis. An initial analysis was on the room acoustics of the recordings. The parameters of interest were sound pressur...

Several techniques for reproducing spatial sounds via multiple loudspeakers have been developed in recent years. A key problem for such techniques are comb filter effects caused by the uncertainty of the receiver position when playing coherent sounds from multiple loudspeakers (spatial aliasing). Here we studied if panning between two closely-spaced loudspeakers can create a virtual source that...
متن کاملA Loudness Model for Time-Varying Sounds Incorporating Binaural Inhibition
This article describes a model of loudness for time-varying sounds that incorporates the concept of binaural inhibition, namely, that the signal applied to one ear can reduce the internal response to a signal at the other ear. For each ear, the model includes the following: a filter to allow for the effects of transfer of sound through the outer and middle ear; a short-term spectral analysis wi...
